Head Teacher's Welcome

Welcome to our new school website. We are a large multicultural Junior School near the centre of Huddersfield.  At Birkby Junior School we work hard to provide a creative, enjoyable and rewarding learning experience for each child in an inclusive, secure and stimulating learning environment.

We are proud of our school community and celebrate the rich and diverse backgrounds of all our pupils.

The Staff and the Governing Body at Birkby Junior School are committed to working together to give children the academic and life skills they will need to be successful.

We care about our Parents and Carers, we welcome your involvement and we look for your support in ensuring good attendance, good behaviour and hard work from your children. We operate an open-door policy and welcome you into the school anytime you would like to talk.  Hopefully you can find all the information you need on our website but if you can’t please feel free to call into school. We will be happy to help you and answer any further questions you may have.

Thank you

Mrs Susan Davis

    Online Safety
Dear Parents or Carers, Think U Know - Keeping Safe Online Think U Know is a national organisation who work to keep children safe on and offline. They have produced a range of useful information and activities about keeping safe whilst online. The activities are designed for families to complete together. The activity sheet attached has been created to help you learn more about live streaming, which has become a popular feature on many apps and online platforms. Also, it contains information on how to take actions to stay safe and some fun activities to explore the internet safely together as a family. The conversation starters are a great way to start your online safety conversation at home. You could then visit the Thinkuknow website – it provides tips on how to be safe when live streaming online. There is also a fun family task for you all to take part in together. We hope you find it helpful. Thank you. Mrs H Mitchell Computing Lead

    Changes to COVID-19 Guidance
Dear Parents and Carers, As you will be aware further changes to government guidance regarding COVID-19 will be implemented today. The government have named this next phase ‘Living with COVID-19’. I appreciate there may be some nervousness and anxiety amongst children, parents, carers and staff and we will continue to do everything we can to work with you to help everyone feel safe when attending school. The key changes are: Children and young people who are unwell and have a high temperature should stay at home and avoid contact with other people, where they can. They can go back to school, college or childcare when they no longer have a high temperature, and they are well enough to attend. From 1st April, updated guidance will advise people with symptoms of a respiratory infection, including COVID-19, and a high temperature or who feel unwell to try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people, until they feel well enough to resume normal activities and they no longer have a high temperature. Adults with a positive COVID-19 test result should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for 5 days, which is when they are most infectious. For children and young people aged 18 and under, the advice will be 3 days. School will not hand out any test kits to staff or pupils unless advised by our local health protection team, local authority or director of public health. Thank you in advance for your support and understanding. Kind Regards, Mrs S Davis Head Teacher

    Ramadan 2022
Dear Parents/Carers, RAMADAN As a school, we wish to ensure that during Ramadan we do all that we can to support our Muslim pupils to fulfil their commitment to fasting. At the same time, we want them to be able to continue their education with as little difficulty as possible. I have outlined below some things which school and home can do to help. As a school we will: • carefully consider the content of lessons, so that pupils can continue to take part without undue distress, e.g. less energetic work in PE rather than stamina and training; • praise pupils’ achievements and commitment; • help our non-Muslim pupils to understand how to behave around those who are fasting; • encourage pupils to remember the behavioural aspects of the observance of Ramadan. Parents The following will be helpful: • please let your child’s teacher know your wishes with regard to fasting; - should the child break his/her fast if he/she feels weak or unwell? • If your children are fasting on some days only, please consider choosing weekends or the Easter holidays, and try to avoid days which will cause disruption to school work e.g. Year 6 SATs preparation. Fasting at Lunchtimes We encourage parents to allow their children to spend lunchtime at home. This allows them to rest and avoid energetic and physical activities. I hope that together we can help our pupils to approach Ramadan in a positive and responsible way. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you wish to discuss this further. Yours Sincerely, Mrs S Davis Head Teacher
